Are there banking facilities in Melaque?

Yes, (Banamex), with an ATM machine, is located at Gómez Farias 25-31, in Melaque, which is the best place to get your pesos. Note that the Banamex bank in Melaque will not change US or Canadian travellers cheques or cash into pesos unless you have an account with the bank! There is an HSBC ATM at the ZLO airport - however some travellers have found that it may not be working. Bring enough "starter" pesos with you in case. You can check the exchange rate at x-rates.com. As of December 2010 the rate was about 1,240 pesos for $100 CAD (approx 12.5:1). (Note the "$" is used to signify Mexcan pesos - so don't get confused!) Don't go to an ATM late at night alone, but the towns need tourism to survive and crime is low.

Do we need to rent a car while we are there?

You will not need to rent a car. There are excellent bus services to Colima, Guadalajara, Manzanillo, and Barra de Navidad, just to name a few. There are a couple of excellent tour people here, (Canadian and British) with whom we have been on quite a few trips. All very worthwhile.

What are the best trips to take in the area?

Apart from fishing in the area and just enjoying the beaches and town, trips to Colima. Colima City, which has archaeological treasures and the volcano - is a delight to behold, Colima is a wonderful little town to visit for the day; the tianguis (open air market) is the best place to shop for produce and souvenirs. Some of the other attaractions in the area are listed here. Tours, such as those run by Ray or check out Costalegre Travel Guide.

Isthe beach safe?

Melaque, which shares a 5km long beach with Barra de Navidad has some safe swimming beach areas where even the most timid people can get into the water without fear of an undertow dragging them in.

Which are the best restaurants?

"Best" is subjective, but check out our map of Melaque to see our and our visitors' suggestions.

What do I need to bring with me?

It depends on your length of stay, and whether you are going to just stay in Melaque or do some hiking or visiting other places along the coast or inland. Anyway:

Pack light. That means washable, light, summer clothing. However, it also means don't pack too much. Leave room in your suitcase for clothing purchases. Even evening events call for casual attire. Bring a few pairs of shorts, T-shirts or light tops, a couple of pairs of long pants and a waterproof windbreaker or raincoat. It may be good to add a sweatshirt to your list. You may experience a cool evening when you will need something warm. Don't forget the basics of underwear, socks, sun hat, bathing suit, cover up and a beach towel.
